| March Luncheon with guest speaker Shari C. Hyman |
We were pleased to have Deputy Criminal Justice Coordinator/ Director, Mayor’s Office Special Enforcement Shari C. Hyman, as our March luncheon speaker.* Ms. Hyman discussed how through a coordinated multi-agency response, OSE identifies and quickly addresses quality of life issues in New York City. Her main topic of discussion was the enforcement measures OSE uses to confront the counterfeiting of designer handbags and other items particularly in Lower Manhattan. She noted that using innovative and cutting-edge enforcement strategies the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement, in conjunction with the NYPD, FDNY, the Department of Finance, the Department of Health and elected officials, has been using Nuisance Abatement laws to close in on the illegal trademark community along Canal Street. Ms. Hyman also discussed how private corporations are used to underwrite these sometime long and costly trademark investigations. She cited a recent case in Chinatown, where the Mayor and Police Commissioner announced the closing of 32 illegal storefronts and the seizure of $1,000,000 worth of knock-off goods by her office, the 5th Precinct and Patrol Borough Manhattan South.
