President’s Message:

Our October guest speaker will be Deputy Secretary for Public Safety for New York State, Michael Balboni.  Deputy Secretary Balboni was appointed by Governor Spitzer to this cabinet-level position in January 2007.  He previously served as a New York State Assemblyman in the State Assembly for eight years until being elected to New York State Senator in 1997.  In his current role, Deputy Secretary Balboni oversees all homeland security and criminal justice agencies for New York State, which include the State Police, Department of Corrections, Division of Criminal Justice Services, Division of Parole and Office of Homeland Security. He coordinates all homeland security and law enforcement policy and serves as state liaison to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The AAPLE Annual Golf Outing was held on September 10th at the North Hills Country Club.  Thankfully, the weather held-up and the outing remained dry throughout the afternoon.  Many golfers commented on the pristine condition of the course and the wonderful dining experience that followed.  Overall, the outing was a great success.  Of course, this event would not be possible without the many thoughtful contributions received from our members and sponsors.  On behalf of the Board, I would like to personally thank our sponsors for their generosity.

Also take notice that the AAPLE Annual Seminar will take place on Monday, November 19th, 2007, at 6:00 PM, in the Law Offices of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft, located at One World Financial Center, New York, NY, 38th floor conference room.  Due to the popularity of this event, members must pre-register by calling 917-579-7593, or by email at breilly@aaple.org.

Chief Michael A. Markman

Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Chief Michael A. Markman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at John Jay College in 2006, as a tribute to one of NYPD’s most innovative, dedicated and accomplished police executives.  The Scholarship provides the recipient with full tuition, books and fees.

All expenses associated with the scholarship come solely from private contributions from the Chief’s family, friends and colleagues.  The initial fundraiser yielded donations to support the first two years. The current goal is to raise additional funds to sustain the scholarship for a full ten years.  Anyone interested in contributing may send donations to: The Chief Michael A. Markman Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 505, Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. 10706.  For additional information or questions regarding the scholarship, or related matters, please call Leo Callaghan at 516-522-2695 or Virginia Markman at 914-478-4468.
